Sima Ladjevardian Hosts Virtual Town Hall with Houston’s COVID-19 Health Care Heroes
July 27, 2020
HOUSTON, Texas -- On Friday, TX-02 Democratic nominee Sima Ladjevardian hosted a virtual town hall with three Houston doctors treating COVID-19 patients to discuss their experiences on the front lines, the challenges they face, and their needs from elected officials.
Ladjevardian was joined by Dr. Kanene V. Ubesie, acute care general surgeon serving as Chair of Surgery and Co-director of the Surgical ICU at HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, Dr. Sidra Younus, hospitalist at Houston Methodist Medical Center and Chief Medical Officer at IMED Consultants, and Dr. Charu Sawhney, outpatient internist previously serving the clinics of Houston’s Legacy Community Health system — and one of the 100+ signees on a letter condemning Congressman Dan Crenshaw for his COVID-19 disinformation.
“The coronavirus pandemic is ravaging Houston and yet we’re still contending with public health disinformation from shameless politician Dan Crenshaw, who went to Washington as a straight talker and changed into a partisan hack,” Sima Ladjevardian said. “That’s why I want to use my platform to elevate the voices of those sacrificing the most to keep our families safe: the medical heroes serving on the front lines. In Congress, I will do everything I can to advocate for the medical community, protect the families of Houston, and guarantee the health care we deserve.”
“I’m a part of the group that wrote a letter criticizing Representative Dan Crenshaw for spreading dangerous misinformation,” Dr. Charu Sawhney said. “Science, public health, and the way this virus works does not change based on where you live or what your politics are, so we need to focus on the science and the facts. As a physician, my job is to teach people how to protect themselves. We need to keep our personal opinions and political affiliations out of it — because this virus does not care what you feel. It’s been heartbreaking to see people not wearing masks or staying socially distanced, because it goes against the common knowledge in public health on how to keep everyone safe.”
