Crenshaw Exposed, Duckworth Takes the High Road, Ladjevardian Steals the Show
August 26, 2020
HOUSTON, Texas -- Yesterday, conservative posterboy Dan Crenshaw took the stage hoping to jumpstart his political ambitions and soak up the spotlight. Instead, the nation was reminded of who the congressman really is.
First, the Washington Post profiled Sima Ladjevardian’s strong chances to unseat Dan Crenshaw in the race for TX-02. Sima’s profile was the Post’s most-read opinion piece on night three of the RNC.
“There are very few political contests at the moment that dramatize the choice facing the nation in November better than the one in this district, which includes a wide swath of the Houston suburbs.”
“Ladjevardian is smart, tough and persistent. And her biggest ally could be the same factor that is gradually threatening the GOP’s lock on the Lone Star State: demographic change. Texas is a magnet for immigrants, and that has already transformed the politics of the state’s big cities.”
A Crenshaw loss would be one of the most defiant repudiations of Trumpism imaginable. It would also reflect the changed reality of Houston, which has gradually become one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the country.
“‘I’m not so much running as an Iranian American, but as a mom, a breast cancer survivor and a political activist,’ Ladjevardian told me. ‘As an immigrant, I understand the value of why our votes matter and why it’s essential to be civically engaged.’”
“If health care and the pandemic become the deciding issues in the race, Crenshaw could be in trouble.”
The Dallas Morning News noted that Tim Murtaugh, communications director for the Trump campaign, called Crenshaw “a great voice...for the president.” The problem? He’s running to represent TX-02, not Trump. Here is Sima’s take in the article:
“‘It’s really clear that his political ambition comes before the people of Houston and of this district who are hurting.’ Ladjevardian said Crenshaw is ignoring issues important to his constituents and slammed his response to the coronavirus pandemic: ‘He’s been putting his career before his conscience during this time.’”
The Texas Tribune highlighted the most glaring examples of Crenshaw’s loyalty to Trump.
“But many other times he has backed the president up — and won praise from Trump in return. On TV, he has defended Trump’s comments in the aftermath of violence at a rally by white supremacists and Trump himself once tweeted a video clip of Crenshaw defending the president’s coronavirus response.”
Since then, protests have erupted in the wake of racial injustice and more than 11,000 Texans have died from COVID-19.
“Crenshaw...may be trying to walk an impossible tightrope — speaking at Trump’s convention but refusing to utter his name. The omission suggests the Texas congressman, who faces a tough re-election race against Democrat Sima Ladjevardian, is worried about being tied too closely to his president.”
Even USA Today jumped into the mix to highlight his shameless remarks about Senator Tammy Duckworth’s patriotism —which she finally responded to — and the condemnation Crenshaw received from 100+ Houston doctors for his dangerous disinformation around COVID19.
“During a virtual ‘MAGA meetup’— a gathering of Trump supporters — in July, Crenshaw made headlines for questioning fellow veteran and Sen. Tammy Duckworth's, D-Illinois., patriotism, accusing her of supporting the ‘destruction of America’ for suggesting there should be a ‘national dialogue’ about removing various statues and monuments of the Founding Fathers.
“Duckworth said in response that she doesn't want statues of George Washington pulled down, and ‘appreciates Congressman Crenshaw’s service to our nation and will continue defending his First Amendment right to say whatever he wants, including that he believes dialogues are ‘worthy of criticism’ in a country founded on the right to free speech.’”
“The Congressman has been criticized for spreading some misinformation regarding coronavirus, with more than 100 doctors, medical professionals, and emergency room physicians from the Houston area signing their names in a July letter condemning him.”
And while we’re on the topic of coronavirus, the Houston Chronicle announced that Dan Crenshaw’s latest maskless campaign appearance is now under investigation for violating Texas’ commonsense public safety rules:
“An event hosted by the Travis County Republican Party and attended by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and U.S. Reps. Dan Crenshaw and Chip Roy on Friday is under investigation as local authorities look into a complaint that the event violated state and county coronavirus orders.”
“‘Should these politicians be exempt from the county and statewide mask mandate? Absolutely not,’ McKay said. ‘Our COVID numbers in Texas are still really high, and there’s just no reason why any group should be getting together 100-plus people in the middle of the pandemic.’”
Dan Crenshaw was taking maskless photos with donors and violating Governor Abbott’s explicit mask mandate. The Crenshaw team’s response?
“Crenshaw’s spokesman said in a statement that the congressman ‘wore a mask during the entirety of the event other than when he was speaking and for a few, brief photos that were taken outside.”
