Crenshaw’s COVID Lies Loom Large as Texas Breaks Case and Death Records
HOUSTON, Texas -- Yesterday, Texas shattered grim records: 10,400 new cases and 75 lives lost. And as these tragic milestones pile up, Congressman Dan Crenshaw’s dangerous COVID disinformation is looking even worse.
Congressman Crenshaw has been moving the goalposts on the pandemic threat for months and continues to demonize the free press and the facts while refusing to amplify the pleas of public health experts. As POLITICO reported yesterday:
Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw, who represents Houston, has repeatedly used his social media platforms to decry “agenda-driven” reports about hospital capacity. And while he's posted that concern and precaution is warranted, as of Monday night he hadn't hadn’t used his two Twitter platforms — which combined have more than 1.6 million followers — to amplify public health messages like masking or social distancing, even as Houston hospitals and doctors warn that cases are soaring.
Even national health publications are taking notice of Crenshaw’s complicit role in the deadly spread of COVID-19 in Texas. As Kaiser Health News notes:
Local officials had tried to protect Houston. Early in the pandemic, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, a Democrat who serves as the county’s top elected leader, implemented business closures and stay-at-home and masking orders. But Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, both Republicans, called them an “overreach” that “could lead to unjust tyranny.” On April 27, Abbott overruled the county guidance, and announced plans to reopen businesses and relax social distancing guidelines.
In response, TX-02 Democratic nominee Sima Ladjevardian issued the following statement:
“Yesterday, we watched in horror as Texas shattered two more grave milestones: 10,000 cases and 75 lost Texans. I will not stand by while Dan Crenshaw continues his disinformation tour and endangers our families with outright lies. Thousands of Houstonians are flooding our medical system and struggling to breathe, and the more Dan talks, the less safe this community is. We need an advocate for public health who will listen to the experts and do everything possible to alleviate this pain. Instead, we have Dan Crenshaw — a shameless enabler who undermines the most basic facts and feeds the fire of this already-tragic pandemic. Enough is enough.”
On Monday, the Sima for Texas campaign made waves with a four-month timeline of Congressman Dan Crenshaw’s biggest lies about the coronavirus crisis. And last week, the campaign unveiled a new digital video attacking Congressman Dan Crenshaw for spreading disinformation and endangering the health of Texas families. The video — “Dan in Denial” — features a compilation of Crenshaw’s most damaging comments in direct contrast to the advice of public health experts and state officials.
