Preventing gun violence is not a partisan issue – it is a human issue and we must work to find common ground to protect people. Nine out of 10 Texans support universal background checks, including a majority of gun owners. I support the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 that requires background checks on all gun sales, with exceptions including law enforcement officers, security professionals, and members of the military acting in their official duties; loans and gifts between family members; emergency self-defense; and friends using each other’s guns while hunting or target shooting.
I’ll work to pass extreme risk protection orders (sometimes known as red flag laws), close the “boyfriend loophole” that allows access to guns by physically abusive ex-boyfriends and stalkers with previous convictions, and to close the gun show loophole that allows the ability to buy a gun without a background check from an unlicensed dealer at a gun show. I’ll work to keep in place the ban on bump stocks and to ban the sale of military-style assault weapons. I’ll never accept money from the big gun lobby in Washington.
